NSW Friends of parliament - organ & tissue donation & transplant awareness

On 19/10/2022, Australia’s oldest Parliament, in what was Australia’s first hospital, took an historic step, with the formation of the NSW Parliamentary Friends of Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplant Awareness - Jubilee Room of Parliament (formerly the Rum Hospital)

One of the best ways to increase the number of lives saved through Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplants is to increase Next of Kin Consent.

There are a few simple ways this can be achieved.

Education

Communication

Legislation

If we educate our communities about the life saving benefits of Organ and Tissue Donation and our doctors, nurses and hospital teams on how to implement worlds best practices in identifying Organ donors and how best to communicate across cultural, religious and language differences more lives will be saved.

If we communicate across the board the positive benefits that Organ Donation can bring to not just recipients but to the families of donors we will increase the number of families who give their consent when the time comes.

Finally if we use the power of parliaments and the legislature process to ensure the policy framework exists to deliver the right environment for Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplants to take place lives will be saved.
